Training in ABPM, the “Renal Biopsy” of Hypertension

24 hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) is the gold-standard for diagnosing sustained, white coat, and masked hypertension. It’s a better predictor of cardiovascular events than office readings and carries a Grade A recommendation by the United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF).
The evidence is unequivocal and yet not all nephrologists perform ABPMs.  Fellows have even less exposure to implementation, interpretation, and reimbursement.
Last year, Raymond Townsend of U Penn and Daichi Shimbo of Columbia-Presbyterian created a course to address the above deficiencies. In addition to reviewing the evidence and billing aspects, the course focuses on practical considerations such as learning about the software and monitoring protocols, and correctly educating the patient on the dos/don’ts while wearing the monitor. The hands-on session allows attendees to familiarize themselves with the various models and wear an ABPM for the afternoon.
After attending last year, I not only gained a deeper understanding of ABPM but now have a resource for future questions. This year’s course (1 day) will be held on Monday, September 11th, in San Antonio, TX.
I have no financial or formal relationship with the organizers.

Clinical Kidney Transplantation Course

The Universiteit Leiden and Medical University Medical Center in the Netherlands recently launched an open online course in Clinical Kidney transplantation. This course is endorsed by the European Society of Organ transplantation (ESOT) and it is divided in five modules that you have to complete in 5 weeks, although turning off deadlines is optional:

1- Before the transplant.
2- The surgical procedures and the challenged patient, including the patient with diabetes
3- Early challenges
4- Late challenges after transplantation
5- Final Quiz

The modules include videos, 3D movies, interactive patient cases and a forum for discussions. You can add subtitles to the videos as well. Signing up is very easy (and free!) and you can watch the videos on your desktop or laptop or using your mobile device (I suggest to install the app Coursera for easy access)

Courses

A bit of housekeeping here - I noticed that all of our current course announcements were out of date. These have now been updated with the most recent versions of each course including the following courses coming up shortly:

ASN Board Review Course - August 2-8 2014
HD University - August 15-16 2014
Brigham Renal Board Review Course - August 4-8 2014
Medstar Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation Course - October 11, 2014
Ultrasonography for Nephrologists - October 25-26 2014 (which I recently attended and thought was excellent)

All of these courses have substantially reduced fees for trainees.

Here is the list of courses

Edit: Just to mention that the director of the ISHD meeting, John Daugirdas, contacted me and let me know that the new edition of the Handbook of Dialysis will be out later this year. If you were thinking of buying it (and I did in the past), you might want to wait until then.

Ultrasound Course for Nephrologists

Continuing our practice of highlighting excellent courses for Nephrologists and Fellows, here is a message from Professor W. Charles O'Neill regarding the annual Ultrasound for Nephrologists Course at Emory University this October. The course brochure and application form are here

"Ultrasonography is an invaluable tool in nephrology and, following the lead of other specialists, nephrologists are beginning to incorporate ultrasound into their practice. It is convenient, economically feasible and improves patient care. Since this skill is not generally taught in training programs, we have been offering the Ultrasonography for Nephrologists course. The course has been very well received and has been given continuously since 1997. It is a comprehensive, weekend program that provides both didactic and hands-on training in ultrasonography of native and transplanted kidneys, end-stage kidneys and allografts, and guidance for biopsy and central venous catheterization. There are 6 hours of hands-on training that include patients with a variety of abnormalities. Also covered are financial aspects including equipment costs, billing, reimbursement, and other aspects such as reports, record-keeping, databases, quality assurance, and accreditation. There will also be an opportunity to use equipment from a variety of manufacturers. Pretty much everything a nephrologist needs to get started."
